In this three-part series, we investigated questionable insurance practices and security measures at the nation’s largest storage company.
Over the course of several months, this undercover investigation revealed that unlicensed Public Storage employees were illegally selling insurance to customers. We also compiled data that demonstrated the insurance company behind those policies was regularly denying valid claims.
The undercover investigation demonstrated how Public Storage employees lied to customers, leading them to believe they could not rent a storage locker unless they first purchased an insurance policy. Former Public Storage employees later revealed that they were forced to meet insurance sales quotas even though they were not legally authorized to sell the policies.
Burglary statistics and police reports compiled for this series also revealed that Public Storage had a disproportionately high number of break-ins. A follow-up undercover investigation exposed lax security measures.
